Final image

This was the final design i submitted. I was fairly pleased with the end result considering my photoshop knowledge it pretty basic. Some bits of the internet images still have white bits of the background image still on them, and i tried to cut around them as closely as possible. This obviously makes the image look quite unprofessional. I do however like the colours i chose in the end, and like how the colourful hand drawn jumper stands out from the darker background. I think the quote is important in helping to get the meaning of the images across to the reader, and they may of not made sense without it.

Here were some possible backgrounds, i posted one up on the group blog without any background colour, as i was unsure what to have, i then posted these 3 versions to get some feedback. Personally i liked the woodgrain background, and it became clear that this was my groups favorite too. The woodgrain was an image from the internet cut and pasted into my image.

development

The inspiration for my final design was taken from Eduardo Recife's work, where he uses a mixture of collage and hand drawn imagery to create unique illustrations. I created the design around a quote from the interview asking him what he dislikes about his appearance, to which he replies ' Sometimes I wish I wasn't so recognisable, so I could observe people like I used to'.

I decided to collage a few disguises onto an image of him to tie in with the quote of not wanting to be noticed, the hat, moustache, colour jumper and the masking tape were all done by hand then scanned in. The grey jumper was material I scanned in, and the glasses with nose and the polaroid were found on the internet.

I then played with colour for the backgrounds as well as writing a shorter version of the quote between the images to make the message more clear.

The first two images were me playing around with positioning on another idea, before i settled for the Polaroid one. I didn't use some of the other ideas, because it may of involved taking too much imagery from the web to use within the collage, and i wanted to try and use as many original images as i could e.g hand drawn elements, scanned in patterns or materials.

This is my favorite idea from some of the initial ideas i have had, i wanted to create my collage using photoshop, because most of my illustrations are usually hand drawn, and this would create more of a challenge for me as well as developing my 'skills'.

Here are some very initial ideas for my collage,,

Ideas and development

After looking up artists for inspiration i read the article again and picked out key words and phrases that stood out to me as possibly being something i could illustrate.

  • 'My happiest time? In jamaica sitting on the veranda with my grand-mother, people watching and listening to poetry and local gossip'
  • Greatest fear: growing old alone
  • Most unappealing habit? ''I like ironing my socks'
  • The worst job you have done? 'I tested whistles for the police'
  • Closest you have come to death? 'In the middle of a shoot out in a club. I hid in a speaker box. Three bullets hit the box but missed me'

Eduardo Recife

Here are a few images of Eduardo Recife's collage work, he does not work for a client or to a brief, all of his works are personal. I love the vintage look that his images have and the mixture of hand drawn and cut imagery. He has managed to achieve these unique images from years of collecting vintage magazines, the typography featured in his works is all hand drawn created by him.

Hanoch Piven

Hanoch Piven uses different products and art materials to create portraits of well know faces. Piven has had 20 years experience and has appeared in most major american magazines and newspapers, such as; Time, Newsweek, Rolling stone, The london times and many more.

Because this project had a short turn around time, I decided to just go for it and draw the main image straight off, with the idea that if it went wrong I would still of had enough time to do something else. The image was created using coloured pencils, I then scanned it into photoshop and edited by changing the contrast slightly. I played around with a few backgrounds and decided to have either a greeny background or leave it white. I posted it onto our group blog to get feedback and it was decided to keep the background white, as it made the image stand out more.

Emma Dibben

Emma Dibbens work can be seen all over the country on waitrose bags and products. I really like the loose style of her paintings and the odd perspective of certain products.

Globe artichokes

The description for this article was a full colour realistic drawing of a globe artichoke. I therefore started my research by looking on google images to find a reference picture. The above are a few of my favorites.
